Each year, 14-18 young people live together in a house sequestered from the rest of the world, spending their days taking classes in Singing , Dancing , Acting , and related fields, each preparing one or two songs for a 3-hour concert which they give each Sunday evening for television viewers and a live studio audience. Each week, one of the students is eliminated until reaching the grand finale, in which five of the remaining students compete for the top prize. Students are eliminated based on whoever receives the fewest votes during the week (the votes are stopped at the end of the concert). Viewers can vote by telephone, but unlike '' American Idol '', calls are not free. Each vote costs 25 Mexican Peso s.
A related show, ''Camino a la fama'' airs during weekday afternoons and shows what the students have done that day in the house, not only academically, but also recreatively and interpersonally.
La Academia is a show from TV Azteca , one of Mexico's biggest TV Station s. La Academia is a very popular reality show in Mexico and has constantly received higher audience-ratings than Televisa 's shows in the same time-slot. In fact, Televisa 's singing contest show '' Operación Triunfo -Mexico'' (the official Star Academy franchisee) was only shown in one season, while it was a great success in its Spanish -edition. Televisa's edition of '' Big Brother '' have not attracted more audience than ''La Academia'', not even its VIP edition that features celebrities.
All the shows, the concerts and the summaries are hosted by Alan Tacher . The show has brought artists like Yuridia, Yahir, Myriam, Victor, Nadia, Toñita, Erika and Carlos among others.
The show has been franchised to other countries: Malaysia ('''') and The United States ( La Academia USA ).
