The competition started in 1996 with 16 competing clubs, and Pohang Steelers won the inaugural competition on penalties over Suwon Samsung Bluewings . FORMAT The Korean FA Cup takes place after the end of the regular K-League season, and is usually completed within a short timescale. Games are played on a single elimination format with extra time and penalties if required. K-League sides are seeded in the 1st round of the tournament proper, but all matches are played at neutral venues such as Gimcheon and Namhae .
