The constituency covered the northern part of the
Metropolitan Borough of
Knowsley , prinicpally the town of
Kirkby . Originally, it was represented by
Robert Kilroy-Silk , who resigned in
1986 , prompting a
By-election which was won by
George Howarth .
Following a review by the
Boundary Commission in
1995 , the constituency was expanded at the
1997 General Election to form the new
Knowsley North And Sefton East constituency.
Howarth continued as an MP for the replacement constituency of Knowsley North and Sefton East.
