Knight2king Theory

The theory was inspired by a scene from '' Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone '' (''Sorcerer's Stone'' in the U.S. ) in which Harry, Ron, and their friend Hermione Granger take the place of chess pieces and play in a life-sized chess game. The authors of the Knight-to-King theory claim that the moves made in this game are analogous to the events during the seven years that Harry and his friends will spend at Hogwarts:

: If the chess game in Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a metaphor for the series as a whole, and the pieces the characters play a metaphor for their roles in the series, how do we reconcile the fact that Ron Weasley plays, not only the role of the Knight, but also that of the King—the same role played by Albus Dumbledore in the larger war? Pretty simple, really—Albus Dumbledore is Ron Weasley. [http://www.knight2king.net/Knight2King/weasleyisourking.html]

(This is the origin of the name "Knight to King": Ron has gone from being a "knight" in the story to the "king".)

The authors of the theory go so far as to assign each major character in the series to one of the Pieces In Chess ; they then use the movement of the pieces on the chessboard as a metaphor for the characters' actions and behavior in the story. Specifically, each of the seven moves of the piece supposed to represent Harry are related to each of Harry's seven years in school; this metaphor is even taken so far as to evaluate the position of the piece in each year and note the relative positions of the major players in that year's story.

Proponents of the theory also point to a number of seemingly-offhand clues in the books as evidence that Ron and Dumbledore are the same person: the fact that both have large hands, for example, and the fact that Dumbledore's leg is scarred in a manner that could be consistent with an injury that Ron sustained.

RESPONSE AND CRITICISM

Although there are certainly people who think that this conjecture is true, the theory tends to be met with derision in the fan community, especially after this post on J.K. Rowling 's official site:

: Rumor: Dumbledore is really Ron/Harry 'from the future'

: Response from J.K. Rowling: {Link without Title} I shall go further and tell you that NONE of the characters in the books has returned from the future.
