Information About

Kitchen Stadium

Kitchen Stadium was a set constructed in a Fuji TV sound stage in Odaiba for the show '' Ryoori No Tetsujin ''; broadcast in the United States by the Food Network as '' Iron Chef ''. Food Network borrowed the name for its current adaptation of the original, '' Iron Chef America ''.

In the fictional background of the Japanese show it is said that the chairman has spent his fortune to realize his dream of constructing "kitchen stadium," a forum where the best chefs in the world go to battle. In fact this is all false, and the budget for the show and to build kitchen stadium came from various companies and private investors. The 'chairman' is really a famous actor in Japan and has done numerous acting roles beyond Iron Chef. During its run, the show was among the most expensive of Fuji TV's stable of programming, with exotic ingredients costing up to $10,000 US for a single episode.

In both shows, the stadium is set up with two identical kitchens, audience seating, and a judging table. Each episode sees one of shows regular chefs selected to a food battle, by the guest chef challenger. In order to spice things up, the chairman waits until the last minute before revealing the mandatory "secret" ingredient. Both chefs then have 60 minutes to create a full meal (of any amount of dishes) that highlights the flavors and essence of the secret ingredient. Eventually the judges taste the creations and select the week's winner. Even though it was always popular in Japan, it had a huge cult following in the United States.

An important difference between the Japanese and American shows is that in the Japanese show, the Iron Chefs always cooked on the right side of the stadium, in the American version the sides can be different for each Iron Chef .
