Kettle River (minnesota)




The Kettle River is a Tributary of the St. Croix River , about 80 mi (130 km) long, in eastern Minnesota in the United States . Via the St. Croix River, it is part of the Watershed of the Mississippi River . It drains an area of 1,060 sq mi (2745 sq km). Its name is the translation from the Ojibwe Language ''Akiko-ziibi'' due to the turbulant whitewaters giving the appearance of water boiling in a kettle.


COURSE

The Kettle River rises in western Carlton County and flows generally southward into western Pine County , past the towns of Kettle River , Willow River , Rutledge and Sandstone . It flows into the St. Croix River 10 mi (16 km) east-northeast of Pine City .

Near its headwaters the river collects the West Branch Kettle River, which flows southeastwardly from its source near Wright . Other tributaries include the Dead Moose and Split Rock Rivers, which join the Kettle in Carlton County, and the Moose Horn , Willow , Pine and Grindstone Rivers, which join it in Pine County.


RECREATION

Banning State Park is centered on the river between Rutledge and Sandstone . Near its mouth the river passes through a portion of St. Croix State Park . The river was designated a Wild and Scenic River by the Minnesota government in 1975 .
