KANA (香奈) is a popular Japanese singer of the JRock/JPop genre. She began her career as a model for The Gothic And Lolita Bible magazine, and still appears in the magazine regularly. In 2000, she ventured into music by releasing the Maxi single, "Hebi-Ichigo (蛇苺)". Although her vocal work is often criticized for its harsh, screechy tone, her songs were well-received and more singles such as "Chimame (血まめ)" and "Kuuchuu Buranko (空中舞乱孤)" followed. Kana eventually released her first full-fledge album, "Doubutsu-teki Ningen (動物的人間)" in 2001, followed by "Kikei-teki Ningen (機械的人間)" in 2002, and "Ningen-teki Ningen (人間的人間)" in 2003. Her latest album, "Spade," was released in early 2005. VOCALS CONTROVERSY Kana's singing vocals is often the subject of severe criticism. There's almost always no middle ground when it comes to its preference -- you either love it or hate it. Kana uses two distinctive types of vocals in her songs; the first is a harsh, screechy type that can be heard on singles such as "Chimame (血まめ)" and "Hebi-Ichigo (蛇苺)," while the second is of the cutesy, high-pitched variety found in songs such as "Mori (森)" and "Papichan (パピちゃん)". Interestingly enough, her speaking voice seems to resemble more of the latter than the former. VISUAL KEI OR NOT VISUAL KEI? There are debates as to whether Kana can be categorized as Visual Kei . Although one of her strongest attributes is her sense of fashion, she does not follow the traditional look of Visual Kei artists -- no heavy make-up, crossdressing, or facial piercings.
