1876 - George Hall of the Philadelphia Athletics becomes the first major league player to Hit For Cycle . He will also become the first player to be banned along with others for throwing 3 1/2 game lead with 12 games to go 1877 .

1933 - New York Yankees Lou Gehrig 's consecutive-game streak stays intact, even though he and Manager Joe McCarthy are thrown out of a game. McCarthy is suspended for three games but Gehrig's streak, now at 1,249, continues.

1952 - Boston Braves Pitcher Warren Spahn ties the National League record of Jim Whitney with 18 Strikeout s in 15-inning, 3-1 loss against the Cubs . Spahn’s Home Run is the only Braves run. On the same day, Braves scout Dewey Griggs signs Hank Aaron a contract.

1963 - In a 10-3 win over the Reds at Crosley Field , Mets ’ Outfielder Duke Snider hits his 400th career Home Run off of Bob Purkey .

1965 - Jim Maloney no-hits the visitors Mets for ten innings and ties the NL 18 strikeouts in extra innings, but loses 1-0 when Johnny Lewis connects for a homer in the eleventh.

1969 - Hitting two home runs, two Doubles and a Single , Reggie Jackson Drives In ten runs as Oakland routs the Red Sox , 21-7.

1974 - In 12 innings, Angels ' Nolan Ryan strikes out 19 Red Sox batters, including Cecil Cooper in six consecutive times.

1979 - Giants ’ first baseman Willie McCovey hits his 513th home run off Dennis Lamp establishing him as the National League all-time left-handed home run leader.

1985 - Coming out of retirement, Manager Earl Weaver returns to the Baltimore Orioles dugout replacing Joe Altobelli . Weaver led Baltimore to six American League titles from 1968-82.

1995 - In a 13 inning game, Giants Infielder Mike Benjamin goes 6-for-7 and drives in the winning run beating the Cubs, 4-3. He sets a major league record by getting 14 hits in three games. A career .186 hitter in his first six seasons, Benjamin was 14-for-18 in that stretch.

1996 - Cal Ripken sets a new consecutive games world record by playing in his 2,216th consecutive game. The previous mark of 2,215 was held by Hiroshima Carp Third Baseman Sachio Kinugasa playing in the Japanese Central League .

2002 - Due to 14 Interleague contests all played in National League parks, a Designated Hitter is not used in a full slate of major league games for the first time since 1972 . Visiting pitchers will get plenty of opportunities to swing the bat as there isn't a home game scheduled in American League park for the 10 consecutive days.

2003 - After being activated from the Disabled List by the Dodgers , first baseman Fred McGriff Bats Cleanup and goes 2-for-4 in his return against the Padres . It was his first trip to the DL during his 18-year career.
