Jonathan Barnett, more commonly referred to as Jon Barnett, became Youth Mayor of Southend-on-Sea in 2005, 34 years after the position was initally abolished due to council reorganisation. The position of Youth Mayor was reintroduced in 2005 and Jonathan Barnett was the first to hold the position since the reintroduction. Jonathan Barnett's period of office terminated in February 2006, when the new Youth Mayor was elected. Jonathan Barnett also held a seat on the Youth Parliament during the same period he was Youth Mayor .

Jonathan Barnett's period of office was associated with a campaign to help rid Southend of the stereotyping associated with young people and the creating of stronger links between Southend Council and Southend Youth Council . Jonathan Barnett was also involved in presenting a petition to the government asking to acknowledge a change in Southend's population, which was causing a shortage of funding from Central Government.



Southend-on-Sea is a coastal town with a population of just over 160,000, approximately 40 miles to the east of London, England .
