Information AboutJoel Green |

Joel Green was the subject of a significant controversy in the Roman Catholic Church , particularly the Diocese of St. Louis, Missouri , in January 2005 . On November 23 , 2002 , Raymond Burke, bishop of St. Louis, received the final vows of Julie Green, who wished to join the St. Francis Of Assisi as a Nun at a Convent within the diocese. Before Green's vows were received, a letter was written to the Papal Nuncio , Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, informing him that Julie Green was a Transsexual . Montalvo informed Vatican authorities, but the subject was kept quiet for several months. Burke intervened and reprimanded the letter writer (Mary Helmueller) for having bypassed him to contact Montalvo first. Burke claimed the Vatican had granted permission for Green to join the Franciscans, and that Green "in no way espoused the sex change as right or good." Despite massive efforts to keep the Green controversy away from the media, on January 11 , 2005 , the traditionalist Roman Catholic publication TRADITIO exposed the fact that Julie Green was born Joel Green, a biological male. Many traditionalists were outraged at Burke's approval of Sister Green to join the order, as well as John Paul II permitting Green's taking of the vows, considering the Church's position on the (it felt) immoral procedure the new Sister had undergone. |
