Jerry Apodaca




After earning a Bachelor Of Science degree from the University Of New Mexico , Apodaca opened his own Insurance business. In 1965 , Apodaca was elected to the New Mexico Senate , where he served four terms, from 1966 to 1974 . He was elected governor in 1974, making him the first Hispanic governor in the United States since 1918 .

One of the priorities of his administration was reorganizing State Government . In 1975 Apodaca created a Cabinet system of government, with twelve major departments. During his tenure he also consolidated agencies and abolished several boards and commissions. Apodaca was appointed to a national level position by President Jimmy Carter , who named him Chair of the President's Council on Physical Fitness in 1978 . After his term as governor, Apodaca became involved in publishing Periodical s targeting Hispanic audiences. Apodaca served in the Marine Reserves , was a founder of ''Vista Magazine'', and was the first publisher of ''Hispanic Magazine''. He also served on the University of New Mexico Board of Regents, from 1985 to 1991 .

Currently, you can see the former governor walking the streets of Santa Fe, stopping off at the Bull Ring to enjoy a beer, or attending Sunday Mass. As such, his legacy will be bookmarked by his unoffensive, humble demeanor, the kind of man you can talk to without knowing that he was once the most powerful man in the state.
