James's Fort ( peninsula in Kinsale harbour, on the opposite site of the River Bandon from Kinsale and overlooking the town. Construction of the fort, which is named after King James I of England and VI of Scotland, started in 1602 , immediately after the Battle Of Kinsale , on the site of an earlier fortification, called ''Castle Ny-Parke'', which accommodated the Spanish forces during the early part of the Siege Of Kinsale -- until it was captured by an English contingent (commanded, according to Burke's ''Irish Family Records'', by Sir Richard Smyth), part of the forces commanded by Charles Blount, Lord Mountjoy .
