The Republic of West Florida Historical Museum is located in it. GEOGRAPHY Jackson is located at 30°52'15" North, 89°12'52" West (30.837588, -91.214436). According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 11.574 Km&2 (4.5 Mi&2 ). 11.6 km&2 (4.5 mi&2) of it is land and 0.224% is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 4,130 people, 841 households, and 596 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 356.7/km&2 (924.2/mi&2). There were 992 housing units at an average density of 85.7/km&2 (222.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 46.56% White , 52.30% African American , 0.15% Native American , 0.39% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.07% from Other Races , and 0.53% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 841 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.8% were Married Couples living together, 21.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.08. In the town the population was spread out with 15.1% under the age of 18, 12.0% from 18 to 24, 44.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 6.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 226.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 264.7 males. The median income for a household in the town was $27,455, and the median income for a family was $32,450. Males had a median income of $20,917 versus $17,896 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $12,039. 27.2% of the population and 18.7% of families were below the Poverty Line . 27.8% of those under the age of 18 and 20.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
