''Island in the Sky'' is a 1953 film about aviators who have to make an emergency landing in the winter in Canada . It focuses on their survival and the effort to rescue them. It is based on a Novel by Ernest K. Gann . The film stars John Wayne , Lloyd Nolan , Walter Abel , James Arness , Andy Devine , Allyn Joslyn , Harry Carey, Jr. , Ralph Hunt, , Hal Baylor , Sean McClory , Wally Cassell , Gordon Jones , Frank Fenton and Regis Toomey .
