Island Express is a common name used for the 6525 Bangalore - Kanyakumari and 6526 Kanyakumari-Bangalore Express which is a Train run by the Indian Railways . It is a daily train, and covers its distance in an over-night plus mid-day journey. It would be surprising that the starting and terminating stations of this train are not islands. The name was given because the predecessor of this train used to start its journey from the Willingdon Island station in the Kerala city of Kochi (Cochin), way back in the 1960s. At that time, this was the only train which connected Bangalore ( Karnataka state) to Kerala. Island Express also witnessed a horrible railway accident, when a large number of its coaches fell into a Lake , when it was crossing the railway bridge. Hundreds lost their lives. The driver of the train, became a nervous wreck after this, and was later declared unfit for driving. |
