The Iowa gubernatorial election of 2006 will be held on November 7 , 2006 . The incumbent Governor , Tom Vilsack , a Democrat, has already served two terms and has decided not to seek a third term. A primary election will be held on June 6 , 2006, to determine who will represent the Democratic and Republican parties in the November 7 general election. CANDIDATES Democrats

State treasurer Mike Fitzgerald, another potential Democratic nominee, announced on September 13 , 2005, that he would not seek the nomination. State agriculture secretary Patty Judge withdrew from the race for the Democratic nomination for Governor on February 15 , 2006, instead choosing to be Secretary of State Chet Culver's running mate. Waterloo -area lawyer Vernon Weems and mayor Wallingford mayor Mark Yackle were also potential candidates for the nomination, but failed to file for the primary election by the March 17 deadline.
