Interstate 190 (abbreviated '''I-190''') runs 28.34 miles (45.61 km) from I-90 near Buffalo, New York to Lewiston, New York via Niagara Falls . The first 21.24 miles (34.18 km) are the tolled '''Niagara Thruway''', part of the New York State Thruway system; parts were built on former Lehigh Valley Railroad and Erie Canal Rights-of-way . The rest is the '''Niagara Expressway'''.

It is the only Three-digit Interstate Highway to reach the Canada - United States border; it continues across the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge and into Ontario as Highway 405 , a short freeway spur to the Queen Elizabeth Way . The interstate also has an interchange leading to the Peace Bridge , which also crosses the international border and becomes Queen Elizabeth Way on the Canadian side.

In 1957, the route was assigned the number Interstate 90N, as intercity routes were numbered before the Three-digit Interstate s were assigned to the shorter intracity routes. It was soon renumbered to I-190, possibly with the final numbering in 1959.
