Indian Film Censor Ratings

  • U — Universal: Suitable for all ages

  • U/A — Universal with adult/parent guidance. Unsuitable for those under 12.

  • A — Adult: Can be viewed only by those above 18.

All films shown in theatres and television must get a certificate. According to the ''Cinetomatograph Act of 1952'', all adult content is barred from television, though is permissible on DTH .

RATINGS

Universal films may be seen by all age groups. All family dramas, comedies without double meaning, and love stories without explicit content fall under this category.

U/A certification are films that have objectionable visuals, dialogues with double meanings, and scenes that may have a negative bearing on those below 12 years.

Adult certification means that the film is unsuitable for those under 18. This covers scenes of sex, kissing, adult language, themes and erotic scenes.

SUBJECTIVE PARAMETERS

Since the censor board members are appointed by the Indian Government , it often tacitly censors themes which are objectionable to the ruling government. Political themes are often heavily censored.

Kissing is a subjective theme. In the past, it used to get an A rating, but in these days it gets a '''U''' certification as long as the kiss is not prolonged and erotic. A dance sequence having a closeup on a woman will get an A rating, but if the same scene is shot from afar, it gets a '''U''' rating.
