Founded by Kerala 's Communist leader A.K. Gopalan in 1958 in Thrissur , the ''Indian Coffee Workers Co-Operative Society Federation'' today has 52 coffee shops and 1,809 employees in southern Kerala. There is one based in Thalassery which has about 14 restaurants in northern Kerala. It has quite strong presence across the major cities of India, especially in Calcutta . While labour unrest, trade union militancy and mismanagement have caused problems in many profit-making ventures and cooperative societies of Kerala, the ICH has had no such issues.

The ICH has in the past often been used as a safe rendezvous for many people, including sales executives, intellectuals, politicians, professors, legal experts, small-time businessmen and book worms, who used to sit for hours, just for Rs.3.50 for a coffee.
