An Indian boarding school is one of many schools that were established in the United States during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century to educate American Indian youths according to American standards. These schools which were primarily run by missionaries proved traumatic to Indian children, who were forbidden to speak their Native Languages , taught Christianity instead of their native religions and in numerous other ways forced to abandon their Indian identity[http://www.sacbee.com/static/archive/news/projects/native/day2_main.html and adopt European-American culture.
