''This article refers to a Bone in the mammalian Ear . For the artist-owned Record Label specialising in the dissemination of free-improvised music set up by Derek Bailey and Evan Parker , see Incus (record Label) .''

The incus is the Anvil -shaped small Bone or Ossicle in the
Middle Ear . It connects the Malleus to the Stapes . It was first described by Alessandro Achillin of Bologna.

The incus only exists in mammals, and is derived from a reptilian upper jaw bone, the Quadrate .
