Imperial Colors Incident

The Imperial Colors Incident or '''October Incident''' in Japan occurred soon after the outbreak of fighting in Manchuria during 1931 . Captain Isamu Cho had (without orders) returned secretly from North China , and had hatched a plot with Lieutenant Colonel Kingoro Hashimoto and with Shumei Okawa for a coup scheduled for October.

Statesmen and officials such as Prime Minister Reijiro Wakatsuki , Grand Chamberlain Makoto Saito , Prince Kimmochi Saionji , and Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal Makino were to be Assassinated . The Imperial Palace and Government buildings were to be seized, while a new cabinet would be formed under General Sadao Araki , chief of radical Kodaha faction. Certain younger elements came to doubt the leaders, however, and seceded from the plot. In addition there were leaks which reached the War Minister , General Jiro Minami . The latter requested General Sadao Araki to pacify the malcontents. Sadao Araki there upon attempted to reason with Kingoro Hashimoto and Isamu Cho , but they refused to abandon their scheme and were arrested by the Gendarmerie in October.

Punishments were no less mild than after the March Incident , although the ringleaders were transferred. The elegantly titled "Imperial Colors Incident" thus ended in apparent failure, but it exerted profound Psychological repercussions among Political and Financial and Capitalist circles, in particular. In turn it lent added impetus to the activities of the secret " Sakurai Kai " Society under Kita Ikki and Shumei Okawa .
