iDisk is a service offered by Apple to all .Mac members that enables them to store their digital photos, movies and personal files online. .Mac users get a total Storage amount of 1 GB for Email and iDisk storage.

iDisk integrates with Mac OS X appearing as a network Drive mounted automatically on the desktop. Mac OS X V10.3 and V10.4 allow users to use their iDisk when offline, and synchronize with it when they go online. One of iDisk's benefits is its close integration with Mac OS X ; however the Macintosh Finder is unnecessary when accessing or modifying a user's iDisk, leading people to use FTP clients instead.


Folders

  • The "Sites" folder of a .Mac iDisk contains the files created by HomePage, the .Mac online web authoring tool.

  • The "Software" folder of a .Mac iDisk contains .Mac exclusive software, such as GarageBand Jam Packs.

  • The "Public" folder of a .Mac iDisk can be used to host downloads - the "Public" and "Sites" folders are the only ones which can be accessed by people other than the iDisk owner, but the "Public" folder can be made password protected via the .Mac Preference Pane in Mac OS X .



BACKUP


Included with iDisk in the .Mac bundle is Backup software that allows you to Backup your files to your iDisk. Then if your Apple Macintosh Crashes you can then use the Apple Backup software to restore your files from the iDisk, or any other drive/location you have selected in the backup app.
