Ian Bedford made an astonishing start to his first-class cricket career with Middlesex CCC in 1947 , as a 17 year old. He returned to club cricket for several years, until he succeeded John Warr as the county captain in 1961 .

He played in 65 first-class matches between 1947 and 1962 , taking 103 wickets at an average cost of 32.71, with a personal best of 6/52.

He died prematurely following a Heart Attack , while batting for Finchley at Buckhurst Hill in 1966 . He was 36.
