Hundred is so named because Henry Church would sit on a rocking chair on his porch near the train station. As the train came into the station, people would say "There's old Hundred," referring to his age. Eventually the name stuck and the station- and the town- became known as Hundred. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 344 people, 146 households, and 83 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 282.6/km&2 (735.8/mi&2). There were 178 housing units at an average density of 146.2/km&2 (380.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.67% White , 0.87% African American , 0.00% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.00% from Other Races , and 1.45% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 146 households out of which 30.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% were Married Couples living together, 11.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% were non-families. 37.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.11. In the town the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 85.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males. The median income for a household in the town was $25,192, and the median income for a family was $26,731. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $18,750 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $12,395. 33.6% of the population and 26.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 30.0% of those under the age of 18 and 35.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
