GEOGRAPHY Howard is located at 44°0'38" North, 97°31'35" West (44.010422, -97.526435). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 2.4 Km&2 (0.9 Mi&2 ). 2.4 km&2 (0.9 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Howard has been assigned the ZIP Code 57349 and the FIPS Place Code 30460. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 1,071 people, 493 households, and 273 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 439.9/km&2 (1,138.7/mi&2). There were 557 housing units at an average density of 228.8/km&2 (592.2/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.13% White , 0.47% African American , 0.65% Native American , 0.28% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.28% from Other Races , and 0.19% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 493 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% were Married Couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.6% were non-families. 41.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 25.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.06 and the average family size was 2.84.
