Information About

Horse Stance

NORTHERN CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS

In Northern Chinese Martial Arts the distance between the feet is measured by placing a fist and the lower leg on the ground. In the north a relatively narrow horse riding stance is assumed as if riding a horse.

SOUTHERN CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS

In Southern Chinese Martial Arts the distance between the feet is far wider than in the north. The reason for this is that Southern Chinese Martial Arts were designed to be used whilst fighting on boats and barges. The wider posture was created for greater stability in such conditions.
