Cleveland was educated as a Civil Engineer , before becoming a Landscape Gardener . He designed the renowned park system of Minneapolis , and was partially responsible for the design of Central Park and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery . Cleveland's approach was summarised in his seminal work, ''Landscape Architecture, as Applied to the Wants of the West'', published in 1873 . Concerned about the rapid growth of American cities, especially in the Midwest and the Great Plains , he called for better sanitation, park systems and stronger public planning laws. |
