Information AboutHistorical Filipinotown, Los Angeles, California |
|
Many Filipino families began purchasing homes and establishing businesses in the Temple-Beverly Corridor since the 1940s (In the 1930s, the majority of Filpino settled in the Little Tokyo area, then later, the Bunker Hill area). Now, Historic Filipinotown still has a sizable Filipino population but they are in the minority, with a sizable Mexican and Central American population. Although the majority of the area’s population today is not Filipino, the area still has one of the highest concentrations of Filipino Americans in Southern California and still remains the cultural heart of Filipinos throughout Los Angeles. Many Filipino service organizations and institutions, such as the Pilipino Workers Center (PWC), Filipino American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA), Filipino American Service Group, Inc. (FASGI), and Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), are located in Historic Filipinotown, as well as many Filipino restaurants, churches, and Planned-Parenthood clinics. |
