The advantage of a hex map over a Square Grid or ''grid map'' is that the distance between a given cell, and all adjacent cells, remains constant. (The distance from the center of a grid map with a cell of side length and diagonal adjacent cells is √2 instead of .) This has made the hex map a favourite for many game designers since the 1970s . The hex grid was a distinguishing feature of the games from Simulations Publications and Avalon Hill . A few have been invented for a hex board. __ __ __ __ __ / \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ / \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ / \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ / \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ / \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ \__/ Diagram 1.
