It is located at the corner of Conestoga Drive and Wexford Road. The International Business program is partnered with Southington High School in Connecticut, United States. The student run a registered Ontario import/export business. According to the Peel Board "Students will export Canadian goods to Southington students who will market and sell the items in Connecticut. In turn, Heart Lake students will import goods from the U.S. through Southington, and market and sell these items in Ontario." CAMPUS Heart Lake was built in 1989 by contractor Bonfield Construction, at a cost of $12.8 million. Bryan Gooderham was the architect of the building. STUDENTS AND FACULTY The school houses 1,760 full-time students as of fall 2004, 300 of which are bused. The are 412 Year 1 students, 438 in Year 2, 525 in Year 3, 376 in Year 4, 9 in Year 5. The school currently is so far past its original capacity, that it has 12 portables. Heart Lake has 133 permanent staff as of 2004. Heart Lake is also the only school in Brampton which has the enhanced learning program. Administrators The current principal of Heart Lake S.S is Sue Turner. Guidance appointments are made by secretary Mrs. Green in Student Services. HISTORY On April 1st, 2003, a grade nine student was killed in the wooded area behind the school. Police charged a 14-year-old boy with first degree murder. According to police, the victim and accused knew each other, and they believe the alleged assailant acted alone. {Link without Title} ALUMNI Student Desmond Sargeant , is a major award-winning teen filmmaker. The 1994 Junior Mens Basketball Team were the Ontario Provincial Champions. The 1997 Senior Mens Basketball Team were Tier II Champions in the Region of Peel The 1996-1997 Reach For the Top Team went undefeated during the season and placed 1st in Peel Region. Students Simmi Sidhu and Tejinder Sahota, from the class of 1998, were the first recipients in school history of the University of Toronto Mentorship Scholarships awarded to top high school students. Dave Thomas, class of 1996, went on to play basketball with the Michigan State Spartans and helped lead the Spartans to two NCAA final four appearances. He is currently playing professional basketball overseas. |
