It was created in 1900 from the merger of the parishes of Bosden , Bramhall , Norbury , Offerton and Torkington , which had all been part of the Stockport Rural District , to form a single urban district of Hazel Grove and Bramhall . The parish of Woodford was added to it in 1939, from Macclesfield Rural District . The population of the district grew from about 10,000 in 1911 to about 40,000 in 1971. The district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 on April 1 , 1974 , and now forms part of the Metropolitan Borough Of Stockport in Greater Manchester . REFERENCES
