Hawarden Castle refers to both a ruined Castle (Hawarden Old Castle) in Flintshire , Wales or also to the home of William Ewart Gladstone , a former Prime Minister . Both are near the town of Hawarden . The age of the old castle is indeterminate and may date back to Iron Age fortifications. The original castle ( Norman Motte-and-bailey ) was reportedly destroyed and replaced in a short period during the 13th Century . The castle was an important structure during the Welsh struggle for independence in the 13th century. After the English Civil War in the 17th Century the castle was destroyed. New Hawarden Castle is the former estate of Gladstone, which previously belonged to the family of his wife, Catherine Glynne. The old castle is on the estate, currently a private residence although some of the grounds are open to the public. The old castle is open to the public on some Sundays. The actual residence was built in 1752 . Gladstone occupied this home until his death there in 1898 .The castle and estate are still owned by the Gladstone family; the current proprietor is Sir William Gladstone. |
