Information About

Hawaiian Barbecue

Hawaiian barbecue was first coined by Eddie Flores, Jr., founder of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue http://www.hawaiianbarbecue.com in 1999 and is inspired by the comfort food of Hawaii, the Hawaiian plate lunch. Flores, along with his partner Johnson Kam are famous in Hawaii for building the L&L brand through their long-standing reputation of serving the fusion of Asian and American dishes in generous portions and low prices across Hawaii.

A FUSION OF UNIQUE FLAVORS AND THE WARM SPIRIT OF ALOHA

To understand the Hawaiian barbecue, it is essential to understand the concept of the Hawaiian plate lunch. The traditional Hawaiian plate lunch consists of two servings of rice, a serving of macaroni salad, and features a generous serving of a hot entrée (a smaller “mini” version of the traditional plate lunch consisting of one serving of rice, a serving of macaroni salad, and a smaller serving of a hot entrée).

Both the Hawaiian plate lunch and Hawaiian barbecue are famous for their large portion sizes, freshness, and unique blend of flavors. Such is the case with Hawaiian barbecued beef, chicken and short rib selections, which are all marinated with a unique blend of sweet Asian-influenced sauces, special herbs and spices. Hawaiian barbecue also features popular Hawaii pan-pacific selections like Kalua Pork with cabbage (shredded smoked pork with chopped cabbage) and our Chicken Katsu (breaded pieces of boneless chicken fried golden brown served with a sweet dipping sauce). Other menu items include seafood selections like Mahi Mahi and fried shrimp.

Two distinct dishes unique to the Hawaiian barbecue concept are the musubi and the loco moco. The musubi (pronounced moo-sue-bee), which visually appears as an oversized sushi consists of a block of unflavored rice topped with a choice of meat and wrapped in dried seaweed. The loco moco offers a unique twist to an American favorite – the hamburger. The dish consists of two the good old-fashioned homemade hamburger patties over rice dressed with brown gravy and topped with eggs cooked sunny side up.

Most importantly, all Hawaiian Barbecue dishes are not complete until they have been infused with the ingredient unique to the islands – the friendly, warm and welcoming spirit of Aloha.
