Information About

Harris Jayaraj

Harris Jayaraj (born January 8 , 1975 ) is a musician and film music composer (music director, in Indian parlance) from South India . He has written or played music for many Tamil , Telugu and Hindi films. He lives in Chennai , India.

PERSONAL LIFE

The musician was born into a Christian family in Chennai, He studied at Krishnasamy Matric School, in Chennai and later obtained a music degree in London , England .

His father, S.M. Jayakumar, is a film guitarist who later became a noted Indian Christian musician and composer.

CAREER

Harris entered the world of Filmi music as a musician, playing keyboard for many films. He started as a composer by writing advertising jingles.

His first movie score was the music for the Tamil movie '' Minnale '' (2001). All songs from this movie were big hits. One song from the movie, "Vaseegara", became a pop hit which ruled the charts for many weeks. He next wrote music for the Tamil movies ''12B'' and ''Majnu''. Neither film was a hit at the box office, though his film songs were once again extremely popular. His first film score for Bollywood was the music for '' Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein '', a remake of ''Minnale''.

He has since worked on a number of movies, some of which have been hits, some of which haven't. His music, while popular as a stand-alone item, does not seem to be able to give mediocre films a boost at the box office.

COMPARISON WITH A. R. RAHMAN

A. R. Rahman, the Tamil music director, is one of India's most popular and well-known musicians. He writes music for many high-profile films, sells many cassettes and CDs, and has branched out into Western musicals. Harris Jayaraj is inevitably compared to his senior, Rahman.

There are many similarities. They are both personally devout (Rahman as a Muslim, Harris as a Christian) and well-educated in both Indian and Western music. They both started their careers as keyboardists and composers of advertising jingles.

Some critics have said that the similarity extends to their music; they say that Harris imitates Rahman's style.

TRIVIA

Harris has said that his favorite composers are Hans Zimmer (who wrote the music for the film '' Gladiator '' ) and M.S.Viswanathan .
