Information About

Harris Academy

Harris Academy is a Secondary School located in the West End of Dundee , Scotland . It is a state school which originally opened its on August 31 , 1885 . The original building was in Park Place and the school moved to its present building in Perth Road in 1931.

The School also has an official website run by pupils which has won 12 awards from various organisations around the world.

THE UNIFORM

The uniform of Harris Academy is none other than the extremely eye-catching maroon blazer. This is a three button, boxed blazer in maroon with the school badge embroided upon the left breast pocket. This blazer also features double slit pockets, dyed polyester lining, and also two inner pockets (one with a zip). It is now compulsory, due to the influence set by the High School of Dundee, to wear an all black uniform or the maroon blazer; pupils not wearing such garments can expect suspension, detention, or exclusion. The Harris tie is a maroon tie striped with yellow and black. All pupils must wear ties.

FAMOUS PUPILS

There are many famous pupils who have attended Harris Academy and have now left: amongst these is the notorious Buyun Zhao (the Chinaman). He has made an irreversible impact on the school, introducing the concept of "self-deppreciational racism". He is now currently attending the High School of Dundee and is expecting to go to the University of Cambridge.

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

The main building was built in 1931 after the previous Park Place building was deemed too small to hold the school population. The building houses the Modern Languages department, the Social Subject departments, the Science departments, The Religious Education department, the Technology department, the Mathematics department, and the Classics department along with the Assembly hall, the Guidance base, Year-Heads' offices, and the Rector's office.

A newer section was added in the latter half of the 20th Century. This houses the Computing and Business Studies departments, the Home Economics department, the English department, the Art department, the school library, the careers base, the Dining hall, the school's two gymnasia, and the school's swimming pool.

In addition to these there is also a Music Block housing the Music department as well as rooms for music tuition; and a substantial Games Hall building with a fitness room.

Not far from the school are the grounds of Elliot Road. These have been commandeered by the Dundee City Council, but remain under the control of Harris Academy. They include a recently-improved pavilion, a rugby pitch and several football or hockey fields. In summer time, it is converted to Athletics tracks.

Senior pupils are campaigning for the reintroduction of a 6th year Common Room. The Common Room was abolished in the 2003/2004 school year, due to misbehaviour in the then 6th year. The particular incident which led to the removal of the common room occurred during the middle of the year when some clown decided to demolish his guitar inside the common room, throwing a rockstar tantrum over nothing. The incident was later blamed on other pupils who luckily did not have to suffer due to one man's idiocy.

The Senior Staff consist of the Rector (although he prefers the title "Head Teacher"), the Depute Rector, and 5 Assistant Rectors. There is also a school chaplain.

Rector: Mr Thewliss

Depute Rector: Mr Speedie

Asst. Rectors: Mr Murphy; Mr MacDonald; Mr Quinn; Mrs Barty; Mrs Forsyth.
