Harbingers (comics)

HISTORY

When Solar recreated a world that became known as Valiant Universe, a number of super-powered beings emerged. The most notable of those were Harbingers, human beings with a wide range of psionic powers. Throughout history, their powers tended to lie dormant, emerging in occasional bursts that were usually brought on by stress. That changed when Toyo Harada, a Japanese-born Harbinger, established the Harbinger Foundation. He hoped to study the Harbingers and the full extent of their powers. He discovered that he was what he dubbed an ''Omega Harbinger'', a Harbinger who possessed a full range of Harbinger potential. Harada decided to use his powers and resources to change the world for the better, no matter the cost. He began recruiting other Harbingers and creating programs to teach them how to better use their powers. The most skilled recruits became ''Eggbreakers'', Harada's elite enforcers charged with containing renegade Harbingers, among with other things.

In the early 1990s, Harbinger Foundation discovered the existence of Pete Stanchek, the only other Omega Harbinger that existed at the time. Harada hoped that he would become a valuable ally. However, Pete discovered the truth behind Harada's ultimate plan after his close friend, who was outspoken against the Harbinger Foundation and their methods, was murdered by Harada's assassins and an attempt was made to kill Pete Stanchek as well. Stanchek fled the Foundation, taking his girlfriend with him, and decided to stop Harbinger Foundation from reaching its goals. To that end, they recruited other Harbingers. and continued to undermine Harada's plans in any way they could.

LIST OF HARBINGERS

Harbinger Resistance

  • Charlene Dupre (''Flamingo''), a pyrokinetic

  • Peter Stanchek (''Sting''), untrained "Omega Harbinger" with a range of powers

  • John Torkelson (''Torque''), super-strength & durability

  • Faith "Zepplin" Herbert (''Zephyr''), self-levitation

  • Kris Hathaway - the only non-powered member of the resistance. She was Peter's girlfriend. When Peter discovered Harada's malevolent intentions, Kris helped him escape. It was she who suggested that Peter should recruit other Harbingers, thus forming a foundation for the Resistance. She had a brief affair with Torque, which resulted in the conception of a second-generation Harbinger that would eventually become known as Magnus, Robot Fighter . When the conflict between Harbinger Foundation, Harbinger Resistance and H.A.R.D. Corp escalated into an all-out war, Kris withdrew into seclusion.

It has been strongly hinted early in the series that Kris' feelings for Peter were inspired by his subconsious psychic tampering.

Unaffiliated Harbingers

Ax - an unstable Harbinger with the power similar to that of Geomancers , except in his case, it only extends to technological devices. He was merely a skillful hacker until he was discovred by Pete Stanchek's group. With some reservation, Peter activated his true potential. At first, Ax appeared willing to join Peter's cause, he betrayed the group when it was captured by Spider-Aliens. He wound up in control of a suit of the Spider-Aliens' Commando-class bio-armor. Since then, he's been a persistent thorn in the side of all Valiant heroes, most notably '' Bloodshot (comics) '', the ''Harbinger'' resistance and '' X-O Manowar ''. Thanks to cybernetics, he managed to survive until 4002. He confronted the heroes of that time, only to be defeated by them.

Obidiah Archer (''Archer'') - a Harbinger with hyper-perception and enhanced coordination and reflexes. He is frequently partnered with the immortal ''Armstrong''. In the future, he wound up marrying Charlene Dupre, a member of the Resistance known as Flamingo. He founded a spiritial movement known as ''Archies''. While he died while trying to rescue Armstrong, his movement endured all the way into the 39th century.

Angelo Mortalli (''Bloodshot'') - Although it was the nanotech enhancements given to him as part of Project Rising Spirit that granted most of his superhuman abilities (super strength, speed, coordination, healing), the hero known as "Bloodshot" also had the innate Harbinger ability to communicate with and control machines. It was this ability--triggered by the stress of Rising Spirit's operations on his body--that preventing him from aging at an extremely accelerated rate, which is the problem that affected other subjects of Rising Spirit's experiments and caused them to die prematurely.

  • Eugene Mutholland (''Bazooka'')

  • Frank C. Treese (''Fort'')

  • Donald W. Tietz (''Spikeman'')
