Information About

Ham On Rye

Bukowski portrays a neighborhood where economic strife lead children to grow-up tough. ''Ham on Rye'' is filled with profanity, petty violence and unsentimental sexual experiences. The novel also portrays Bukowski’s Abusive Father , the effect of severe Acne on his self-image and social life and the beginnings of his Alcoholism . The protagonist of the novel is Henry Chinaski , who stands for Bukowski in most of his autobiographical works.

''Ham on Rye'' is generally thought to be one of Bukowski’s best books and was also intended to be a sort of reply to '' Catcher In The Rye '' by J.D. Salinger , another novel about an angry adolescent.

Although it is often considered to be an autobiographical work, critics and biographers have noted that Bukowski exaggerated his experiences to suit his own self-image of a rebellious loner.
