The halloween crab, ''Gecarcinus quadratus'' or ''Gercarcinus ruricola'' (not to be confused with the Halloween Hermit Crab ), is a species of Crab , from the family Gecarcinidae . They are native to Central America . The halloween crab is a valuable addition to an Aquarium because it will eat Algae , including Green Hair Algae and Cyanobacteria . In addition, it provides valuable Aeration by sifting through the sand. Halloween crabs can become destructive in a Reef aquarium when they attain a large size. They are best kept in a terrarium simulating a beach, with free access to salt water. They require conditions similar to land hermit crabs: temperature of about 24 °C (75 °F ), 75% Relative Humidity , plenty of sand to dig in, and calcium to supplement their food. They are scavengers and will eat a variety of foods; commercial formulas for fish, hermit crabs, etc. are suitable but fresh is preferred. Care should be taken not to disturb when moulting.
