''Half-Life 2: Episode One'' (formerly known as '''''Aftermath''''') will be the first official "expansion" for the 2004 First-person Shooter PC game, '' Half-Life 2 '' (strictly speaking, it is not an expansion, as it does not require the original game to play). The episode begins shortly after the end of ''Half-Life 2'', in the war-torn setting of City 17 and its vicinity. The player will be forced to deal with the effects of their actions during the main game.

DETAILS

''Episode One'' will run on the same in the episode's announcement article in PC Gamer UK .

In the same article Valve writer , will be enemies in the sequel. Stalkers (converted human slaves), are an almost definite enemy, particularly due to the stalkers appearing in the ''Episode One'' trailer and several screenshots. Recent information also reveals that zombified versions of Combine soldiers will also appear as enemies.

After some initial confusion, it was confirmed that players will indeed be playing as (although the scripts were written by Valve).

Rumors about official expansion packs for ''Half-Life 2'' began circulating soon after the game's initial release. Game magazine PC Gamer UK sparked many rumors when they published an article deliberately misreporting that an upcoming expansion pack would allow players to take the role of supporting character Alyx Vance. However, forum-goers and other fans leapt upon this joke and the rumours began to spread like wildfire. Valve denied claims that Alyx would be a playable character, but for a long time did not confirm that players would take the role of Freeman.

The renaming of ''Aftermath'' to ''Episode One'' came with an indication that there will likely be more expansions in the future, which was confirmed in February of 2006. These episodes will include four to six hours of gameplay each.[http://steampowered.com/Steam/Marketing/February24.2006/

''Episode One'' will be available over Valve Software 's Steam Platform priced at $19.95 USD . The game will also be distributed through traditional retail channels by Electronic Arts as part of the ''Half-Life 2: Platinum Collection'', the planned release date for both is June 1st, 2006. The pre-loading and pre-purchasing phase commenced on May 2, 2006, with ''Half-Life Deathmatch: Source'' immediately available for play as part of the ''Episode One'' package.

BACKSTORY

  • Every supporting character has been confirmed to reappear in some fashion (except for Breen, whose whereabouts are not fully known), for they all miraculously survived the massive explosion in '' Half-Life 2 '' through unknown means.

  • The presence of Dr. Isaac Kleiner on a telescreen in the ruins of City 17 in a recent screenshot and having already been mentioned in an interview with Doug Lombardi, shows he has taken control of the city PA system. However, the continuing presence of Razor trains and Stalkers also suggests that the Combine has not entirely been defeated (although its presence on Earth is most likely leaderless).

  • The Citadel is still standing, although it has a large ring of black smoke surrounding it. Original plans for the now-renamed ''Half-Life 2: Aftermath'' would have included an exodus from City 17, in case the Citadel either falls over or explodes; presumably, this has been carried over. City 17 is in even worse structural shape than it was at the end of ''Half-Life 2'', and according to the website, the Citadel is on a self-destruct sequence.

  • The game's official website mentions that the G-Man "has lost control" of Gordon Freeman. How this will affect the storyline has not yet been revealed, nor how the G-Man has lost control of Gordon Freeman, who until now has seemed helpless to interfere with the actions of G-Man. In a recent interview with IGN, it was revealed that the G-Man loses control due to the rise of a "third power" in the ''Half-Life'' universe. {Link without Title}

  • Due to the destruction and subsequent meltdown of the Citadel's dark fusion reactor the Combine is starting to take things into their own hands, and are displeased with Breen's failure to deal with Freeman and the resistance.
