Information About

Hal Anderson

Popular in the city, Anderson encouraged listeners to vote for him as " The Greatest Canadian " in 2004 as a joke. He placed 34th of 50 people, above William Lyon Mackenzie King , Wilfrid Laurier , Jean Chrétien and Tecumseh . (He expressed regret after the results were in that he beat out Mr. Dressup .)

The fact that a radio jockey who has contributed little or nothing to the betterment of Canada as a whole can be voted as "greater" than many historical figures, is a prime example of some of the failures of Direct Democracy . It shows how easily it can be twisted to suit the needs of an organized group, with or without regard for the purpose of the vote itself.
