Hair Hang




Hair hang is a circus aerial act where a performer (usually girls) are suspended by there hair above the circus ring, and perform acrobatic poses, or manipulation skills. The hair hang act is believed to have originated in South America, however some claim it originated in China, leaving that actual origin in doubt. The act became popular as more of an act is possible hanging by the hair than by performing the "iron jaw".

There are no tricks to this act. The performer learns to tie their hair to the hairhang rig, and then litteraly hang by their hair. While there are not any tricks to this act, there are a number of techniques, including how the hair is tied, how you spin, and how your transition between poses.

It's importiant to understand that hair is extremely strong. One strand of hair can carry a weight of up to one-hundred grams. In theory, you could gradually hang between 5,600 kg (12,345 lb) and 8,400 kg (18,518 lb) from one head of hair without breaking the individual hairs or pulling out the hair follicles.

  • Do you use a hidden harness of some kind? No. There are no tricks to this act.


  • Does it hurt? Yes, this act hurts, especially when first learning it. As you get used to performing this act, your hair/scalp becomes stronger, and this lessons the pain.


  • Do you have to do something special to take care of your hair? Brush regularly, and use a good conditioner.
