Information About

Hair Burning

Importantly, this method of torture did not involve burning of head hair, but rather the hair on the arms. The victim would usually have committed minor crimes to be subject to this.

Elizabethan men and women tended to wear garments with long sleeves. (See 1550-1600 In Fashion .) Therefore before the torture began the prisoner would have his or her sleeves rolled up and hung from a high bar. Then the torturer would smear the arms of the prisoner with flammable oil, rubbing it in. After about half an hour the victim would be weak from being hung for so long and would be untied and taken to the torture chamber. Their arms would be tied to a chair as would their ankles. Then a match would be put to their arms, causing them to ignite. A prisoner rarely died from this treatment. Sometimes their arms had to be Amputated as a result.
