The Guyanas or ''' Guiana s''' is a group of three countries on the north coast of South America : # Guyana , formerly known as British Guiana # Suriname , formerly known as ''Dutch Guiana'' # French Guiana The term is sometimes also used to include parts of neighboring countries: # Guayana , an Administrative Region Of Venezuela , also known as ''Venezuelan Guiana'', formerly known as ''Spanish Guiana'' # Brazilian Guiana , formerly known as ''Portuguese Guiana'' When the Venezuelan and Brazilian territories are included, the geographical boundaries are the Atlantic Ocean to the northeast, the Orinoco to the northwest, the Amazon River to the southeast and the Rio Negro to the southwest, encompassing an area of over 1,000,000 km&2.
