Growth and development Growth is represented by an irreversible increase in dry mass of an organism, while development can be in the form of the following: a) Increase in cell number (through cell division) b) Increase in cell complexity (through differentiation) c) Increase in cell size (through taking up of water) Negative growth is the situation where there is development though it registers a decline in the mass of the organism. It occurs when a plant starts to germinate. The mass of an insect does not lessen when the molting of an old exoskeleton occurs. This is because the insect grows in size as it matures, thus needing more space to grow withing its exoskeleton. This results in the molting of the too-small exoskeleton. The insect then secretes a new exoskeleton, which hardens, and the insect fills it in with its newly grown body. So therefore the insect does not lose mass because it has increased in size and now has a bigger exoskeleton. Growth in education and psychology is the change in body due to age for example a person may grow longer due to some food and medical reason while development are cahnges due learning experiences By Amir Zaman PhD Education IIUI |
