The Great Alpine Road (B500) is a country road from Wangaratta to Bairnsdale passing through the Victorian Alps . At the length of 308 kilometres, it is Australia’s highest year-round accessible sealed road and winds past mountains, valleys, forests, rivers, vineyards and farms.It linked Victoria's North East with Gippsland and was officially opened on the 4th of April, 1998. It was completed with the sealing of the road between Mount Hotham and Omeo . Thus the Great Alpine Road run includes the former '''Ovens Highway''' from Wangaratta to Omeo. Attractions include the Mount Buffalo National Park , alpine resorts like Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain as well as historic gold rush township of Omeo.
