Government College of Technology popularly known as GCT is one of the leading engineering college in India. Located in Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, GCT is a state government funded engineering college. http://gct.ac.in/ Currently it's Principal is Mr. Palanisamy. It is located in a serene campus that sprawls over 45 hectares in the heart of the city. It was founded in 1945 under the name of Arthur Hope College of Technology. It was founded in accordance with the then Government of Madras to give the high priority to technical education under the post war reconstruction plan. The objective was to meet the demand for trained engineers for various industrial development projects in the state and rest of India. The offer of the premises including offices, portion of the workshop, and the hostel along with a donation of Rs. 2,00,000 was made by the well known industrialist and philanthropist of Coimbatore the Late Shri G.D. Naidu. The college shifted to the present permanent site in Thadagam Road in June 1950, and the college was renamed as the Government College of Technology and was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1951. Initially only Civil and Electrical Engineering branches were offered. The Mechanical Engineering branch was introduced in year 1952. The main building of the College was formally opened by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then Vice President of India on 8th October 1959. The syllabus for engineering studies was revised and five year semester system was introduced in the academic year 1968-69. The three year engineering program was introduced in the year 1963-64 in Civil and Mechanical Engineering branches but was subsequently abolished. A new branch in Electronics and Communication Enginnering was started in academic year 1970-71. Post graduate degree course in Structural Engineering (Civil) & Engineering design (Mechanical) were started during 1971. Part-time B.E. degree courses for serving the working community were also started during the same year in Mechanical, Civil and Electrical branches during 1978-79. Consequent to the introduction of the 10+2 scheme, admission to the five year B.E. degree course ceased from the academic year 1980-81 and the four year B.E. degree course was started. A post graduate degree courses in Applied Electronics (Digital Electronics) and Production Engineering were started during 1980-81. The M.E. degree course in Public Health Engineering was started during 1981-82. The M.Sc. degree course in Applied Chemistry was started during 1982-83. The instrumentation and Control Engineering branch was started in the U.G. Programme was started during 1984-85. Subsequently, the nomenclature has been changed as Electronics and Instrumenation Engineering. B.E. degree course in Computer Technology and Informatics was started during the year 1986-87. The nomenclature was changed to Computer Science and Engineering later. A part-time post graduate degree in M.E. Computer Science was started in the academic year 1987-88 and full-time equivalent in 1990-91. B.E. degree course in Information Technology was introduced from academic year 2001-02. From 2001-02 onwards all the UG and PG courses have been affiliated to Anna University. Consequently six new PG courses in various discipline, in addition to the self-supporting course in Bio-Technology at the UG level. The college is recognised by Anna University for doing Doctoral work in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Applied Chemistry, and Appied Physics. Thus from a humble beginning, the college has grown into a premier institution for engineering education in the southern part of the country. Recognition by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) makes this college an epitome of a technical institution. The College has now completed 60 fruitful years of service and the Golden Jubilee Celebrations were conducted during 1994-95. Some alumni of this college: Dr. A.
