The community is located on the Mt. Hood Highway ( U.S. Highway 26 ), near its intersection with Oregon Highway 35 and the Barlow Pass summit of the Cascade Range . Government Camp was given its name by settlers traveling the Barlow Road , who discovered several wagons abandoned there by the Regiment Of Mounted Riflemen . Clackamas County announed in 2005 that citizens of Government Camp have begun the processing of trying to turn the community into a Village . EXTERNAL LINKS
