is a Kreis (
District ) in the middle of
Thuringia ,
Germany . Neighboring districts are
Unstrut-Hainich ,
Sömmerda , the district-free city
Erfurt ,
Ilm-Kreis ,
Schmalkalden-Meiningen and the
Wartburgkreis .
The district was established on
October 1 ,
1922 , when the newly created state of Thuringia was administratively divided into 15 districts and 9 district free cities.
Since
1990 the district has a partnership with the district
Main-Kinzig in
Hessen ,
Germany .
All of the south-western area of the district is covered by the
Thuringian Forest , with the ''Großer Inselsberg'' (916 m) being the highest elevation in the west of the district. To the north there is the ''Fahner Höhe'' with many
Orchard s. The
Unstrut river forms a short part of the northern boundary of the district.
