Gold's Gym is an American founded chain of fitness centers (commonly referred to as ' Gym s') originally started in California by Joe Gold . CORPORATE HISTORY Gold's first gym was located in Venice Beach, California (dubbed ''"The Mecca of Bodybuilding "'') and was frequented by Arnold Schwarzenegger , and also featured in the 1977 movie '' Pumping Iron '' bringing a lot of attention both the gym itself and bodybuilding in general. To this day it is a Landmark in bodybuilding subculture. In 1970 Gold sold the chain and joined the Merchant Marine s, however they retain his name to this day. Later Gold formed World Gym , a new chain of gyms whose expansion at the time outpaced that of the Gold's chain through Franchising . Today Gold's Gym claim to be the largest chain of Co-ed gyms in the world, with more than 600 gyms and 3 million members in 25 countries and 43 states. They also license their name to products such as fitness equipment, Dietary Supplements and clothing. FRANCHISING Gold's Gym franchisees pay between US$500,000 and $1.8 million to develop a new location. Gold's also buys smaller local gyms and upgrades them. CORPORATE INFORMATION Gold's Gym is privately owned, acquired by TRT Holdings in 2004 for approx. $154 million dollars. The current Chairman is Terrell T.
